Based out of Longmont, Colorado, the all-female bluegrass project Sugar Moon blends original and traditional bluegrass music. Solid banjo chops, timeless fiddle melodies, tight harmonies and heartfelt song-writing is at the core of this musical duo.
With a background in classical music and a well-traveled life to draw upon, Elli Varas brings a unique perspective to her songwriting. Her soulful melodies take on new life with the Sugar Moon project. She spends her days working with symphony orchestras, but songwriting and bluegrass are her passion. A musical jill-of-all-trades, you might catch Elli with a guitar, banjo, musical saw, washboard, or wash-tub bass. Formerly of the bands Boxcar Daisies, Alibi Day, and Six Penny, she's thrilled to have found her musical home with Sugar Moon. She lives in Longmont with her 4 year old son, master kazoo-ist Jojo.
Kyra Holt, a Colorado native born and raised in Boulder, has spent the last 16 years in the bluegrass heartland of North Carolina where she played banjo with Kicking Grass and later founded an all-female bluegrass band Sweet By and By. She returned back to sunny Colorado in 2016 with her husband, son and fiddle added to her bluegrass arsenal. She now calls Longmont home, and is excited to be playing again with Sugar Moon. During the day she can be found designing large-scale solar photovoltiac (PV) "farms" helping to create a world powered by renewable energy.
